今年、シーグラフ東京は創設10周年を迎えます。そこでこれを記念したセミナーを６月中に開催いたします。
その第２弾は、ＵＣＬＡのDemetri Terzopoulos教授による
From Physics to Biology: A Personal Journey in Graphics　です。

「今年度のアカデミー賞科学技術賞を、クロスシミュレーションのパイオニアと
　して受賞されたDemetri Terzopoulos教授(UCLA) に、物理学、バイオロジー、
　ＡＩを駆使して創るアニメーションの過去から近未来迄を語っていただきます」

講演概要: Terzopoulos 教授は、もともとはコンビュータビジョンの分野で学位を
取られた方ですが、その直後からグラフィックスの研究も開始されました．80年代後半、
まだレンダリング技術がSIGGRAPHの論文の華であった時代に、物理シミュレーション
に基づくアニメーション手法についての基本的な論文を発表されました
(SIGGRAPH87)．そこでは今日のクロスシミュレーションに至る物理ベースモデリング手
法の基本理念が記されています．これはいわば自然現象のアニメーションの先駆的研究
ですが、さらにAIやバイオメカニクスの手法をもとに、キャラクタアニメーションを
含む生き物のアニメーションに関しても活発な研究を推進されています．これらは今日
の映画やゲーム映像を作る上で不可欠のものとなりました．今回の講演では、同氏の過
去から未来へと続くこうした多彩な研究の道程を、多くの実例を交えながら平易に解
説して頂きます．

Demetri Terzopoulos
University of California, Los Angeles

I became active in computer graphics 20 years ago, shortly after
completing my doctoral work in vision/AI. My interest was kindled by
the surprising realization that graphics modeling had till then relied
just about exclusively on geometry. It seemed that there was an
enormous opportunity for physics in graphics, particularly to produce
animation through simulation. Pioneering work, starting with the
continuum mechanical modeling of deformable objects, incited a
revolution of physics-based modeling and animation research, yielding
innovations such as cloth simulation, which two decades later are
having a major impact on the motion picture and computer game
industries. It didn't take me long, however, to realize the vastly
greater potential of biology-based modeling in graphics. The
confluence of biomechanics, ethology, perceptual and cognitive
science, this exciting methodology, which appeals to my AI roots, has
produced virtual animals and even nascently intelligent virtual
humans. For games, movies, and virtual worlds, this "artificial life"
paradigm promises autonomous characters that will eventually be
directable like real actors. This talk will survey the evolution of my
CG/VR modeling and animation research from physics to biomechanics and
ultimately to artificial life.

BIO:

Demetri Terzopoulos is the Chancellor's Professor of Computer Science
at the University of California, Los Angeles. He graduated from McGill
University and was awarded the PhD degree by MIT in 1984. He is a
Fellow of the IEEE and a member of the European Academy of Sciences.
He is the recipient of an Academy Award for Technical Achievement from
the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for his pioneering
work on realistic cloth simulation for motion pictures. Among his many
other honors are computer graphics awards from Ars Electronica and the
International Digital Media Foundation for his work on artificial
animals, from NICOGRAPH for his work on facial modeling and animation,
and from Computers and Graphics for his work on biomechanical human
animation. He is one of the most highly-cited computer scientists and
engineers in the world, with approximately 300 published research
papers and several volumes, primarily in computer graphics, computer
vision, medical imaging, computer-aided design, and artificial
intelligence/life. He has given hundreds of invited talks around the
world, among them more than 60 distinguished lectures, including
keynote talks at CGI, Eurographics, GI, and PG. Recently, he was a program
chair of PG 2004 and a conference chair of SIGGRAPH/EG SCA 2005.
